You see, this is where I have to say that Canon is way better, and must have magical abilities, because my trusted little A1 didn't even come close to dying while I was in Kenya =] I did drop a lens once, and a pin in the back bent a little, but it was easily remedied with a pair of pliers. I love my little A1, it's like a child to me. A very well-behaved, never failing, always incredible, trustworthy, beautiful, forty-year-old child <3
I'm glad you like London, because maybe I'll like it too. I don't know when I'll be able to go, but I'm sure I will someday. Actually, I've already been, but only inside of Heathrow Airport, and only for about a day collectively. I've always wanted to just move to England and live there for a couple of years. I think it's 'cause I love listening to you Brits talk =D
~tristanbejawn:icontristanbejawn: Sep 18, 2007, 8:41:40 AM
haha nah i love London. Every single week I can visit a totally new art gallery and everytime I go down to central London I see something intersting. And the night life is so good. Nah there is very little about London I don't love! you aren't over estimating it!

Ah Canon vs Nikon lol the debate would last for hours. I think the L range on Canon seems to be pretty nice from what I have read but its really hard to generalise on which brand has better glass because each lens is so unique. I have heard good things about the Canon 85 1.2 but then again the 105mm VR nikkor picked up best pro lens last year in those international photo award place. Its very hard to tell which is better you see?! I think that the Canon Pro flagship dSLR's are very strong but Nikon dominates lots of the market also. . Its really hard for me to justify that my nikkors are better than your canon lenses because I have never tried canon... but i like to think that they jsut are better. lol. . and the Xti annoys me now, not quite sure why.. it jsut does.

I keep finding roll's of film in random pockets of clothes I took to Africa. I think the Mountain was the biggest culprit for the loss of films! my poor OM10 got pretty near to destruction. As did my D70s come to think of it. A service is very much needed.

I used to love black and white, then I went through a color phase, then I went through a digital phase, and now I think Kenya has renewed my love for black and white again.
The process is part of the fun for me, though. I develop myself, and then enlarge in the dark room too. I think it's really gratifying.
Also, where I am, it's almost impossible to find someone to do your enlargements for you (in black and white). I think I would have to send them to Arizona or something, and it doesn't make so much sense.
I really love it, though. It's why I fell in love with photography. It's like magic seeing the developer bring the image out of the paper, and I know it's sick, but I love it when my hands smell like chemicals for days =D
Like you said, I believe in sticking with what you loved in the first place, and I learned aperture and shutter speed and focus and all of the joys of photography on my Canon A1, so I think that's why I have a bias.
You have to admit, no matter how good Nikon is, Canon has the best lenses. I will say, though, that Nikon has really mastered color. I like the colors from Nikon. Or, "colours", as you would say.
Do you like London? I think I must be over estimating it, because no one who lives there seems to love it all that much. Maybe I'm just abnormal.
Haha, it's so true! Everyone here uses the XTi! I don't know why, probably because it's so easy to use, and you don't have to know a thing about photography to use it. I think its on-camera flash is terrible, but then again, what on-camera flash isn't?
It's so funny that you mention losing film. I didn't lose any of mine exactly, but during our stay in the Maasai Mara, we were at a place called Base Camp. It's a really nice eco-resort, but there's one problem: the tents have zippers that you can lock and everything, but right behind the zipper is a velcro strip that allows you to open the tent door without unzipping. I think the baboons have learned how to open the velcro, because they broke into our tents. A couple of guys got their Tylenol Cold and Flu stolen, along with their toothpaste. I didn't have anything taken from me, but I did find bite marks in my Wet-Ones and in my LAST ROLL of film. It was all chewed up, and completely useless (except for a cool story, I guess). It was too bad, though, because I was out of film the whole last day there.
~tristanbejawn:icontristanbejawn: Sep 17, 2007, 2:08:36 PM
thanks.. I have always liked black and white more than colour.. i never shoot colour film anymore, I reckon thats just coincidence.... I have never been intersting in self dev so I just get them processed on various online labs and work on the once i get them back.. a little lazy i guess but it gets the job done. I have quite a loyalty to Nikon. I think you jsut stick with your first camera make, although Nikon are definately better than canon lol. Im probably going to get a D300 soon, they look pretty good.. after that I will probably shoot more digital which is a bit of a shame but it will be good, its great for going on tour.. in Africa i lost about 5 roles of film.. good roles too. so annoying. ...... lol how comes everyone in america uses the XTi? we call it the 350d here and I still quite popular amongst first time buyers. . . although its no Nikon :)
*i-am-pigwidgeon:iconi-am-pigwidgeon: Sep 17, 2007, 1:57:51 PM
Mostly film. I use Ilford 400 a lot too, and when I shoot in color I use Fuji Film 400 or 200, or Kodak 400. I sometimes use a Canon EOS XTi, but not often because it's not mine =] My camera is a Canon A1, and if I can I'd like to buy a Canon EOS 5D. I have a loyalty to Canon, if you can't tell =D
Your black and whites are so good. Do you enlarge them, or do you have them enlarged by someone else?

Ilford 400 black and white film with an OM-10 and 50mm f1.4 along with a D70s and a 50mm f1.8. I still prefer film but digital has its advantages, especially when away. You film or digital?
*i-am-pigwidgeon:iconi-am-pigwidgeon: Sep 17, 2007, 6:22:19 AM
I'm so jealous of you, living in London. I have always wanted to live there. I know this sounds crazy, but I love the weather. I have a habit of buying long coats, even though there is only about a week out of the whole year when I can wear them here. I think it's because I'll use them when I live in England someday.
I want to live in Africa, too.
Foundations are difficult work. Twice a year, I go down to Mexico and build houses for families there. We have about 20 people working on each 11x22 ft. house, and we still barely finish after three days. It's the foundation that takes so long. We spend a whole day mixing and pouring the concrete by hand.
Isn't that interesting, how the locals are always better? When I was in Honduras a the summer before this last one, there were three men working along with our group of 14 or so, and the three of them accomplished three times as much as we did.
I want to go to South Africa too, because I know a couple of families from there, but I think I need to go East first. My sister visited Ghana, and her stories are amazing. They have a lot of problems with witchcraft over there, and a lot of superstitions. And I would love to go to Nigeria.
I have heard a lot about the need in Tanzania (for some reason about 5 people that I know have gone there throughout the past year. It seems to be a trend), and I think I would like to go there, too.
It's funny, for some reason, I feel like I will love Kenya more than any other country in Africa. I just don't know how anything can beat it.
Do you shoot in black and white film, or is it digital converted to black and white?

Im from London. I barely saw any military at all actually, all the people with guns were the security gaurds standing outside petrol stations and shops with shotguns and AK-47's. Very intimidating. I might upload a picture or two of them.

We didnt manage to see the whole project through, in fact we really only managed to dig foundations and first walls, although there were many of us and we got lots done but there was just so much to do and we were no where near as good as the locals that came down to help us. The police kept stopping us on the roads but I never knew what it was for, just lef tthe guides to sort it out! Ah yeah i am travelling back to africa as soon as I get the oportunity. south california sounds nice lol.
*i-am-pigwidgeon:iconi-am-pigwidgeon: Sep 16, 2007, 1:15:10 PM
Wow, you built an orphanage? That's amazing. How long did it take you guys?
Isn't it creepy how the military are everywhere, and they all carry huge guns? I don't know about Tanzania, but in Kenya they stop people on the side of the road (I think it's a traffic check, to see if people are wearing their seat belts) every so often. They also told us that if we photograph the military guards, they might shoot us.
It is great. The whole continent is so captivating, and so rich in culture. I envy people who have culture. Americans have none. I absolutely fell in love with Kenya, and something tells me it will be the same way for the rest of the continent, whenever I can get there.
I'm from Southern California.
Where in the UK do you live?
~tristanbejawn:icontristanbejawn: Sep 16, 2007, 9:33:13 AM
We went to help build an orphaniage in Moshi. We did quite a good job in the end, it was good. I was supposed to camp with the Masaii but it jsut didnt happen which i was really bummed out about. I went to a few of the capital cities when I went which was interesting but no that fun, quite intimidating.. lots of guns. I also did some volunteer work at a nunery and taught a class of english which was quite fun but I don't think I did a very good job.. I just took pictures lol. Its gerat though isnt it?! Where are you from?
